Virus scanners are as bad as viruses!

I've been dealing with a problem on my computer for months now.  It would take 20-30 seconds to open a document if I opened it from a network drive.  I uninistalled AVG antivurus and rebooted and it's fixed!

What am I to do?  Norton is an incredible memory hog, McAffe loads so much "anti-other stuff" that it's just as bad as norton, and AVG - well there you go.

Should I just let down the walls and make sure I don't click on anything suspicious?

frustration abounds...

The problem with the IPod Touch

12/22/2008 11:07:53 AM Technology Tony Comments (1)

It's unfortunate really.  I've never been a fan of Apple but the problem with the IPod touch is it's such a great device!  I am a Microsoft man through and through but when it comes to the IPod touch or IPhone I just can't help myself.  My Mom and Sister bought me an IPod touch for Christmas and it is such a beautiful piece of technology.  It's everything a smart phone / mobile multimedia computer should be and sexy to boot.

I've started learning IPhone development and have even written my first "Hello World" app and I can't wait to do more... but now I need to buy a Mac to develop on.  Curse you Steve Jobs, you finally got me!

Someday windows mobile may catch up but right now I'm frustrated with the platform as a whole.   I'm even willing to overlook all of the annoying bits about working with apple for the chance to get my code on this device.   It sucks that you have to publish through the App store and you can't sell your software independently.  It sucks that THEY get to decide if your app is worthily of the App store or if it infringes on their ability to make a buck in any way.   I'm going to start a blog category for IPhone development and keep a journal of my adventure into a new platform.  Stay tuned...

Civilization Revolution Review

7/31/2008 9:22:12 AM Technology Tony Comments

I started playing the new Civilization Revolution and I have to say it's terribly addictive.  I dropped it in the x-box at 9:00 last night and didn't put down the controller until I won a "Cultural Victory" at 1:00 AM.  The last time I played a new game that long was Mortal Kombat II for super nintendo.

For fans of the Civilization series this version is a little dumbed down - which is great in my opinion.   I stopped being interested in Civ back at Civ 3 which was so caught up in establishing trade routes and other minutia that the game just wasn't fun.  They've gotten back to basics while introducing a lot of new features which are fun, instead of tedious.

Being a nerd, i focused my civilization on technology which proved to be a good strategy.  One cannon army can march through a country still using bows.

Oh, and I can't stress the importance of roads between your cities.  Build your first few cities far apart from each other and then build roads between them.  Each road segment counts as one move which can be a huge distance.  This lets you get your military units where they need to be quickly.

If I had to ask for one feature, it would be a "end turn" option even if you haven't moved all of your pieces.  Quite often I found myself telling 5 armies to "wait for one turn" just so I could get the end turn option to show up.

8.5 / 10 - Great overall, a few annoyances

Have you tried Windows Mojave?

It's really amazing what good marketing can do.

Check out this article about a marketing campaign Microsoft is going to put out.  In a nutshell they took video of people who said they had negative impressions of vista and showed them a new operating system from Microsoft called Mojave.  90% of those people gave Mojave positive feedback - then they were told it was Vista.

It's good to see that the placebo effect is alive and well.  Oh - and I'm not saying Microsoft marketing is amazing... I'm saying that Mac's marketing is amazing.  The "switch" campaign in particular.  I'm not sure how many PC users they really got to switch (probably not all that many) but they've successfully got it into people's head that Vista is an unstable piece of junk riddled with bugs.

Having worked with Vista for about a year now I'd have to say there are differences from XP but I'm at the point where I would switch to it.  If it wouldn't take me a whole day to upgrade (mostly to install all of the software I use) I would update tomorrow.

One Vista hint - you can disable "User Account Control" which is the... feature.... that asks you to confirm EVERYTHING.  This is the one thing I found unacceptable but it seems like they knew people would hate it and gave you an easy way to disable it.

Recently I was asked whether to go with 32 bit or 64 bit Vista.  My advice is to go with the 64 bit version AFTER making sure 64 bit drivers are available for your devices.  32 bit applications will run on it just fine (in fact better because each 32 bit application will run in its own process) and you'll be able to take advantage of 64 bit versions of popular software like Photoshop, Autocad, and several of the newest games.
